Karachi has 20 million people. Why is it so hard to make new friends?

Karachi is one of the biggest cities in the world. More than twenty million people live here, work here, eat at the same food streets and sit in the same traffic. And yet ask almost anyone over twenty-five when they last made a genuinely new friend, and the answer is usually the same: university.
It is not that people do not want new friends. It is that adult life quietly removes every situation that used to make friendship automatic.
What changed after university
At university you saw the same people every day, you had shared projects, free time, and a reason to talk. Researchers who study friendship describe the same three ingredients again and again: repeated contact, a shared activity, and a setting where nobody feels pressure.
After graduation, all three disappear at once. Work fills the week. Family fills the weekend. Commutes across the city eat whatever is left. The friends we have drift to Lahore, Dubai or Toronto, and nobody replaces them.
Why “just put yourself out there” does not work
The usual advice assumes there is somewhere to go. But a lot of social spaces in Karachi are either built around people who already know each other, or are online, anonymous and, frankly, a bit risky. Meeting a stranger from a random group chat is not something most people, especially women, are comfortable with. So we stay home, and our circles get smaller.
What actually helps
- Activities over introductions. It is easier to talk to someone while you are both terrible at padel than across a networking table.
- Small groups. Four to eight people feels social without being overwhelming.
- Public places. Cafés, courts, events and trips feel safe and are easy to leave.
- Repetition. One meetup is small talk. The second and third are where friendship starts.
- Knowing who is coming. Real names, real faces and some way of knowing people are who they say they are.
Why we are building Meetscape
Meetscape is built around exactly those ingredients. You pick a plan, see who else is going, and meet in a public place, in a small group, with members who have verified they are real adults. No endless swiping, no anonymous strangers, no pressure.
We are starting in Karachi because this city deserves better than the same five faces every weekend.
